This holiday season, please be courteous to the Veterans, pets, and sensory-sensitive people in our community by obeying local law which prohibits the use of fireworks inside the Katy city limits. (This is a ticketable offence if not obeyed with a fine up to $200.00 and can result in seizure and destruction of such fireworks.)
Check if you are inside the City limits here: www.cityofkaty.com/am-i-a-resident
While fireworks are beautiful and enjoyed by many, they create loud, unexpected noises which can remind Veterans of combat and also contribute to sensory overload for many residents which can cause anxiety, stress, and meltdowns.
To celebrate be considerate by attending organized events, popping fireworks outside the city limits, and by making sure wherever you set off fireworks it isn’t close to their homes or late at night.
Here are some tips for pet owners to help prepare your furry family members for the festivities:
• Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise during the day to tire them out;
• Stay home and if you do attend events don’t take them where the fireworks will be set off;
• Make sure fences are secure and pets have collars with identification, but even better leave pets secure inside your home;
• Leave television or music playing to help distract them from the noise;
• Give them a fun distraction such as favorite/new toys and treats;
• Act normal and don’t acknowledge the fireworks, as they may look to you for how to react.
To report a violation, call Non-Emergency Dispatch at 281-391-4848. For a fire or medical emergency call 9-1-1.
Have a safe and happy New Year’s Katy and take care of your neighbors while you celebrate!
