Winter Weather Driving Safety Tips

Winter Weather Driving Safety Tips 🚗❄️

With cold temperatures and precipitation expected this weekend, residents are encouraged to complete winter weather preparations before Saturday, as road conditions may deteriorate quickly once temperatures drop. Sleet, cold rain, and freezing conditions could lead to icy and hazardous roads, especially Saturday night through Monday.

❄️ Before You Drive:
• Check road conditions before heading out. Icy spots can develop quickly, especially overnight and early morning.

▪️ Drive Texas: https://drivetexas.org/
• Make sure your vehicle is ready for cold weather—check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, battery health, and keep your gas tank at least half full.
• Pack an emergency kit with blankets, water, a flashlight, and snacks in case you become stranded.

❄️ While Driving:
• Slow down and increase following distance—ice can significantly reduce traction.
• Avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, or quick acceleration.
• Use headlights to improve visibility during precipitation and low-light conditions.
• Be especially cautious on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, which may freeze first.

❄️ If Roads Become Icy or Unsafe:
• Stay home if possible and delay travel until conditions improve.
• If you must drive, keep your phone charged and let someone know your route and expected arrival time.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and drive cautiously. We’ll continue to share updates as conditions develop.
