The winter storm forecast for next week remains uncertain, with snow, ice, and cold rain all still possible. Here's what we know:
• By Saturday night (January 18th), colder conditions will set in.
• We’re still working to determine exactly how cold it will get and what kind of precipitation to expect. It could be a messy winter storm, or it could pass with minimal impact.
To ensure you’re ready, here are some tips to prepare:
🔹 For Residents:
• Keep extra blankets, warm clothing, and emergency supplies (water, non-perishable food) on hand. • Insulate pipes and take precautions against freezing.
• Make sure your car is winter-ready with antifreeze, a full tank of gas, and an emergency kit.
• Generator Safety: If using a generator during power outages, ensure it is operated outside, at least 20 feet from your home, to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Never run a generator in an enclosed space.
• Space Heater Safety: When using space heaters, keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable items like curtains, bedding, or furniture. Never leave them unattended and always turn them off when leaving a room or going to bed.
🔹 For Businesses:
• Review your snow and ice removal plans and ensure your facilities are winter-ready.
• Consider adjusting hours or preparing for potential service disruptions if conditions worsen.
• Keep important staff numbers or contacts readily available for any emergency needs.
• Generator and Space Heater Safety: If your business uses a generator or space heaters, ensure they are used safely as outlined above.

Winter Weather Driving Safety Tips 🚗❄️
With the potential for snow, ice, and cold rain early next week, it’s important to stay safe on the roads, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday when conditions may be most hazardous. Here's how to stay safe if snow is part of the forecast:
❄️ Before You Drive:
- Check road conditions before heading out. Snow can accumulate quickly, and some roads may become impassable or hazardous. Stay updated with these resources:
- Ensure your car is winter-ready: Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, and battery. Make sure your tires are rated for winter driving conditions, if possible, and keep your gas tank at least half full.
- Pack an emergency kit with essentials like blankets, water, a flashlight, snacks, and a shovel in case you get stuck.
❄️ While Driving:
- Reduce speed and increase your following distance. Snow creates slippery roads that can significantly reduce traction.
- Avoid sudden movements like sharp turns or quick braking. Snow can cause your vehicle to skid if you're not cautious.
- Use your headlights to increase visibility, even during the daytime. Snow can reduce visibility on the roads.
- If you start to skid, steer gently in the direction you want to go and ease off the gas. Avoid slamming on the brakes.
- Be extra cautious on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, as snow and ice tend to accumulate there first.
❄️ If Roads Are Impassable:
- Stay home if possible. Snowy conditions can make driving extremely dangerous, and it's better to wait until roads are cleared.
- If you must drive, keep your phone charged, and let someone know your route and estimated arrival time.
Stay safe, be prepared, and drive cautiously. We’ll keep you updated as the forecast develops. 🌨️ For more information and updates on weather forecast/conditions, follow us here: City of Katy OEM Facebook.

Brrrrr! ![]()
It looks like we have the potential for a winter storm early next week. Now is a good time to prepare and to Protect the Four 'P's: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants!
We are going to experience low temperatures and possibly snow in the coming days and dressing appropriately for the weather forecast can make all the difference. The first two layers of winter clothing should be all about keeping you warm. The outer layer should aim to protect you from rain, snow, or wind. Your body loses heat through exposed skin so stay covered and warm!
- ONLY go out if absolutely necessary.
- Drive slowly - always adjust your speed down to account for lower traction.
- Keep a bundle of cold-weather gear in your cars, such as extra food and water, warm clothing, a flashlight, a glass scraper, blankets, medications, and more.
- Make certain your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of treads.
- Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times.
- Do not use cruise control and remember to accelerate and decelerate slowly. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight.
- Increase your following distance to five to six seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop abruptly.
