Rain Sensors Help Limit Irrigation Usage
Did you know… a rain shut off switch will override your irrigation system and shut if off when a certain amount of rain has been detected? These switches are very cost effective and will save you money by reducing your water bill and will reduce wear on your irrigation system!
July is Smart Irrigation Month!
“Using smart irrigation options like weather- and soil moisture-based controllers that automatically adjust the watering schedule based on conditions at your location helps keep your landscape healthy, while using less water.” (Courtesy of Irrigation Association and HydroPoint).
Position Sprinkler Heads Away from Paved Areas to Reduce Run-Off
Did you know… making sure your sprinkler heads are positioned away from paved areas will decrease run-off, increase water absorption to your plants and lawn, and reduce how much water you use which saves money on your water bill?
Reduce Wasteful Water Usage but Using Drip Irrigation or Hand Watering!
Did you know… drip irrigation will allow 90% of the water you apply to absorb into your plants as opposed to 50% using sprinkler irrigation? Drip irrigation slowly applies water directly to the soil. Hand watering is also beneficial because it will reduce water use, keep foliage dry, and allows you to tailor the watering needs to each individual plant.
Reduce Water Usage by Checking Sprinkler Heads for Breaks and Leaks Monthly!
Did you know… checking for broken sprinkler heads and leaks at the connections can reduce your water usage by making sure a slow leak doesn’t become an expensive problem? It is recommended to check your sprinkler heads monthly for any leaks or clogs.
The City of Katy asks residents and businesses to continue using daily water conservation techniques so we can do our part in reducing water usage.
June 17th: World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
Droughts are among the greatest threats to sustainable development, especially in developing countries, but increasingly so in developed nations too. In fact, forecasts estimate that by 2050 droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 percent since 2000, as compared to the two previous decades (WMO 2021). When more than 2.3 billion people already face water stress, this is a huge problem. (https://www.un.org/en/observances/desertification-day).
The City of Katy asks residents and businesses to continue using daily water conservation techniques so we can do our part in slowing down the development of desertification and droughts.
Water Late Evenings/Early Mornings
Did you know…. watering when winds are calmer and temperatures are lower (late evenings or early mornings) results in less water evaporation and more water being absorbed into the soil? This will help reduce the amount of water being used to water your landscaping. Help us conserve water by using this simple conservation technique!
Conserve Water Everyday!
With the hot and dry Texas summer months approaching, the City of Katy Public Works department would like to remind residents and businesses to continue everyday water conservation techniques. Conservation techniques can be as simple as reducing how much you are watering your landscape, using native plants in your landscaping that require less water, or using car washes that recycle water instead of washing your vehicles at home.
